Yerevan - Khor Virap Monastery - Smbataberd Fortress (off-road) - Noravank Monastery - Yerevan
After breakfast at the hotel we will take our way to the South on the way enjoying the panoramic view of Ararat. We will visit the monastery Khor Virap located at the foot of Ararat mountain, where there is Ancient Deep Prison and where at the end of the 3rd century the future first patriarch of Armenian Apostolic Church, Grigor Lusavorich (Grigor Enlightener), was imprisoned and suffered for 13 years. From Khor Virap, continuing our way to the South we will get to Yeghegis State Sanctuary where we will visit the Smbataberd Fortress located on the top of mountain and built X – XI centuries with high and wide (2-3 m) pyramid type fort-walls and protected by the Artabuni River and deep canyons. From the fortress there is an amazing view to Tsakhats Kar Monastery and magic jeep route connecting it with the Citadel and telling us about the local legends and story about these two historical monuments. Leaving the fortress we will drive to Areni cave canyon to visit Noravank Monastery built during the XIII – XIV centuries and situated on a ledge of a deep winding gorge of a tributary of the Arpa River. Enjoying the amazing architecture of the Monastery and Khachkars (Cross Stones), we will be introduced to the interesting stories about famous architect Momik and Orbleyan Dynasty. After excursion in the monastery we will be back to Yerevan.
Transportation by Toyota Land Cruiser or similar vehicles, guiding and visits to mentioned sites.
