Garni is the name of a village in the Kotayk Province of Armenia. Tourists know Garni because if the temple of Garni, which is the only pagan temple in Armenia. Garni is also famous for the ruins of the royal palace, baths built with the Roman methodology.
The pagan temple dedicated to Sun, named Garni has a fantastic architecture. It is the oldest temple, which survived and stayed as the only pagan temple in the Christian country. Its history goes back to the ancient time and even some scientists believe that it was built in the 1st century AD.
Every 30 minutes there are minibuses going to Garni from Yerevan. The time of the minibuses is nearly 5:00-6:00 PM and they will take you both to Garni and Geghard and then back to Yerevan. Taxis always can be found in Garni to Geghard, from Yerevan to Garni and back.
Majestic Geghard is located several miles from Garni. Geghard also was known as the Geghardavank monastery is famous for its rocky view. There was a time when the monks gave shelter and food to the travellers who were scared of crossing the gorge at night.
The monastery was created in the 4th century by the Gregory the Illuminator and it was named Airivank. Then it was ruined because of the attacks of Arabs and Seljuk Turks who burnt it down in 923. But the main form of the monastery is still saved.
Geghardavank means "the Monastery of the Spear" and the name was originated from the spear which had wounded Jesus Christ at the Crucifixion. The Spear was brought to Armenia by Apostle Jude, who was called Thaddeus. Now it is saved in the Echmiadzin treasury.
